Andreas, 33 years old, came to my practice in June because of his allergy to “grasses.” He couldn't say exactly what he was allergic to. His allergy had been present for about three years. It started every year in June, and his symptoms were a constantly stuffy or runny nose, sneezing fits, and watery eyes.

When investigating the cause of why his system had developed a defensive reaction to “grasses,” we quickly found the answer:

Three years earlier, in June, his grandmother had passed away. She was over 80 years old, had been very ill for a long time, and her death was a relief for her. He had a very good relationship with his grandmother. He described her as very loving and usually in a good mood.

While Andreas told me about it, I noticed he looked like someone who'd been crying a lot because of his allergy. (His eyes were a bit red/watery, his nose was stuffed up, and he had that typical breathing and “stuffy” way of talking.)

The symptoms first appeared shortly after his grandmother's death and have recurred every year since June.

When I asked him if he had cried when his grandmother died, he said he was generally not very expressive with his feelings and had difficulty showing emotion.

The homework assignment was to write a letter to his grandmother and pour out everything he would like to say to her if he could.

A few weeks later in July, the second appointment took place. Andreas said that the allergy had disappeared since the first appointment! He had written the letter.

So Andreas had not experienced any stress directly related to grasses, but every year in June, the grasses reminded him of his grandmother's death and his suppressed grief.

When it comes to allergies, I often find that simply uncovering the connections is enough to bring about an improvement.
Once the system understood why it had developed a defensive reaction to a harmless environmental substance, the allergy disappeared.
